Sunderkand Recitation

Shanthi Mandir hosted a  recitation of Sunderkand on Saturday, July 13 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Sri Kulbhushan Sharma, who is visiting from India, led the recitation. Community members, in particular, Kamal Singh, joined in the recitation. Sri Sharma concluded the recitation with a short history of the writing of the Ramayana. Several members of the community attended the event, which concluded with arati and prasad.

Sunderkand is the fifth book in the Ramayana. It depicts the adventures of Hanuman.  Sunderkand is the only chapter of the Ramayana in which the hero is not Rama, but rather Hanuman. Hanuman’s selflessness, strength, and devotion to Rama are emphasized in the text. Hanuman was fondly called Sundara by his mother Anjani and Sage Valmiki chose this name over others as this kand deals mainly with Hanuman’s journey to Lanka.
